Kashmir erupts again! But this time for another reason. It is the turn of the shrine Jenab Sahab Soura, which is esteemed for housing a relic of the Holy Prophet. The incident started following a blast at 12.45 p.m and within a short time the fire engulfed the ceiling on the second storey. Due to the excessive fire nine people were injured as they made a daring effort to extinguish the flames in the shrine.
To the locals, the greatest perpetrators were the police who were responsible to provide day-and-night guard in the shrine. To them, there was an overall laxity and lack of interest on the part of administration to protect the Holy relic. However, both the police and local police have confirmed that the relic is safe.
But this proved to enough to infuriate the local people and they as a part of anger attacked the guardroom where the police have been stationed, plundered and fled away with two rifles. This was not all and even in the late hours people gathered in Soura to vent their wrath. The police and also the CRPF personnel, finding no other way, to quell the popular discontentment and disperse the mob resorted to a lathi charge and also burst teargas shells. The pitched battle that went on following this incident injured at least 10 people.
What was most unlikely was the ass ault on the journalists who traveled all the way to gather news! Some of them were beaten mercilessly and even equipments of photographers were smashed. This has triggered a stiff protest in the valley and for this time from the press and media, which is certain to add fuel to the chronic fire.
